What’s a metadata? Well, it’s a file or associated information with your GIS data that will give you more detailed information on your dataset. In this YouTube tutorial, I showed this using a polygon shapefile from the Toronto Open Data regional boundary and parks dataset. You’ll also notice, I added a *.shp file using a shortcut method. If you choose to do this, be careful and make sure you open the correct file. Ensure that you’re file extensions are visible. If you don’t know how to make file extensions visible, I’ve also provided a video that might help.
One closing comment. Metadata varies from dataset to dataset. As I mentioned in the video, I have familiarity with Canadian and American datasets. If you are having trouble, feel free to send a video response or contact me via email/private message. If the dataset is free and royalty free, I certainly post these instructions for you and others without any issues on YouTube. If there are usage restriction, we can definitely work on it privately. 🙂
